There are many things to consider when beginning to explore high schools. The most important is to look for schools that fit your child. This is not about finding the “best” school because the best school might be different for each student. Here are some practical things to consider to get you started:
- Type of school – There are many wonderful options in the Bay Area for Catholic, independent, and public schools. Boarding schools across the nation or even internationally can open up the possibilities even further. Would you consider a single-gender school or do you prefer coed? What type of school fits with your family’s values and priorities?
- Size of school – Would a small school with small class sizes suit your child best, or would a larger school with a bigger social pool and a wider array of options be better?
- Location of school – If your child will be getting themselves to school, is location and transportation a factor? Will you consider some of the schools that are outside of San Francisco?
- Approach to teaching and learning – In what type of teaching environment does your child do best? Do they thrive in an environment that gives them open-ended questions and allows them to approach school work in creative ways, or is a more structured approach best? There are schools that approach education at either end of these spectrums as well as those that land somewhere in between. Think about your student and what type of environment they will need to set them up for success.
- Finances – The cost of a high school ranges from free to over $60,000 per year for an independent school. Even with tuition assistance, an independent school is a significant financial commitment. Be honest and realistic about what your family can afford.
- Specific interests – Does your child have a specific interest or passion for a particular sport, art, music, or subject? Explore which schools can support and challenge your student in their interests.
